Settlers arrived in mid-1850s North Texas, drawn by the ultra-fertile Blackland Prairie soil and reliable freshwater streams from Bear Creek. Elbert C. Thompson opened a general store, and the hamlet was initially known as Thompson or Thompson Switch.
In 1888, the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas Railway (Cotton Belt Route) laid tracks through Collin County. When establishing a post office, the name was officially changed to Lavon in honor of postmaster E.C. Thompson’s son, Bud O. Lavon Thompson.
Lavon blossomed into a cotton ginning center with 300 residents by 1910. The railroad company uniquely manufactured "Ballast Gumbo Gravel" nearby by burning local clay with wood for track bedding — leaving behind pits that became legendary fishing spots!
To control East Fork flooding and secure water, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed Lavon Reservoir between 1948 and 1953. In 1974, a major dam height expansion increased capacity to serve the North Texas Municipal Water District.
